Earlier Sunday, the Chinese National Health Commission reported that 69 new cases had been confirmed nationally the previous day, most of them in Hebei. Others include 21 people who had arrived recently from abroad.
Almost all cases are in Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, which is around 260 kilometers (160 miles) southwest Beijing. A handful of also found in the city of Xingtai, 110 kilometers (68 miles) further south.
Hebei health authorities said that 40 new cases had been confirmed Sunday morning, bringing the total to 223. Another 161 people tested positive but showed no symptoms. China does not include such asymptomatic cases in its official tally.
Both cities have carried out mass testing millions of residents, public transportation and taxis, and occupants are limited to their community or village for one week.
