Thousands of Indian farmers are battling police across New Delhi

Thousands of Indian farmers are battling police across New Delhi. On the occasion of the Republic Day of India, a tractor rally of angry farmers broke through all the security fences and entered the capital, after which the protesters stormed the Red Fort and hoisted the Khalistan flag on the building.

Police have laid on one of their biggest security operations in years in a bid to keep protesters away from Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he oversees a parade full of pomp.

India, the so-called secular state and the world’s largest democracy, used relentless state power to control the protests and ignored the Supreme Court ruling in favor of the farmers.

It may be recalled that the Modi government had in September passed three new agricultural laws under which private traders were given access to public grain markets, abolished the system of guaranteeing fixed government prices of grain and introduced a system of contract farming.
