The President has issued an ordinance to hold Senate elections through open ballot

President Dr. Arif Alvi has issued Election Amendment Ordinance 221 for holding Senate elections by open ballot. The President has signed the proposed ordinance of the Federal Cabinet for holding Senate elections by open ballot. Sections 81, 122 and 185 of the Election Act 2017 have been amended.

The Elections Amendment Ordinance 2021 will be applicable across the country. In case of open voting, the head or representative of the political party will be able to request to see the vote.

Under the ordinance, the party chief will be able to request to show a vote. The Election Commission will be bound to show the vote to party chief or his representative.

The Senate election schedule will be released on February 11, while the Senate election case is still pending in the Supreme Court.

If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the government after February 11, then elections will not be possible through open ballot.
