The Sindh government has decided to transfer Ahmed Omar Sheikh, accused in the murder case of American journalist Daniel Pearl, from death cell to a rest house.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has heard a contempt of court petition against the Home Secretary and other officials for not releasing Omar Sheikh and other accused in the Daniel Pearl murder case despite their acquittal. Secretary Home and other officials appeared before the court during the hearing. The court, after receiving a reply from the Sindh government, exempted the Home Secretary from attendance.

Assistant Advocate General Sindh stated that arrangements are being made to transfer Umar Sheikh to the rest house. In a day or two, Umar Sheikh will be transferred to the rest house. An order of the Supreme Court was also presented in the court.

The Assistant Advocate General stated that he would abide by the decision of the Supreme Court. An appeal is pending in the Supreme Court.

Defendants’ attorneys argued that the court’s decision had been violated. The Home Secretary said that the decision regarding Omar Sheikh was taken by the government, there is no contempt of court against us, I should be excused from attending.

The court exempted the Home Secretary from attendance and adjourned the hearing till February 16.
