Mental illness is a condition that affect your thinking, feeling, mood and behaviour. It can be occasional or long lasting. It can affect ones ability to relate to others and function each day.Today, mental health has been quite normalized especially among the youth. A UK health study states that, 50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24. Mental illness affects not only how well kids perform at school but also how they develop relationships with their fellows. It also affects the hygiene and physical activities.

Types of mental illness:Some of the main types of mental disorders are:

⦁ Mood disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder.

⦁ Anxiety disorders

⦁ Personality disorders

⦁ Psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia

⦁ Eating disorders

⦁ Post-traumatic stress disorder

⦁ Abuse disorders

What causes mental illness?

There are a lot of different factors that contribute in the cause of mental disorder, such as

⦁ Genes and family history: It is highly possible to develop a mental disorder if someone in the family has gone through the same.

⦁ Life experiences such as, abuse or a traumatising event in the past: Abuse in any form is really harmful for a person’s mental health, not only that but a disturbing event from the past causes equal damage.

⦁ Academic stress: Currently, everything is a competition in this world. Not getting grades is one of the main causes of mental illness of the youth today

⦁ The social pressure: Social life has a great importance today. There is a sheer pressure on the youth to live with the trends.

⦁ Having no friends or the feeling of being lonely: In this world full of chaos, it has become really hard to survive alone or with no friends. Being lonely or left out creates an emptiness in ones personality.What help is available?

⦁ Parental Help:

 Parents play the most important role in a child’s physical and mental health. Having a warm and open relationship with your child will help them open up better about their troubles and stress. Being a friend to your child and building your relationship with trust and understanding will keep them closer. It is very important for parents to appreciate every little effort of their child and not put any sort of pressure that may create a distance between them

.⦁ Professional Help:

Nobody can treat a mentally disturbed person but the one who has the knowledge. Going to a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist is always the better option as they have spent years to study the subject and has enough knowledge. Medication is very important for the people with serious cases such as, schizophrenia.

⦁ Communication is the key:

A close friend or an understanding colleague is a great help for a peron who finds it hard to communicate. It is so important to have a listener when you are going through a stressful time. Pouring out your heart and opening up to someone who understands you without being judgemental always makes you feel lighter and relaxed.
